The idea for MateS is for people who cannot or might not want to attend a day centre to have an informal meeting group primarily aimed at younger people although everyone is welcome including partners/carers. The name MateS was thought up by Karen Lambert as it is a group of people who are friends that can help support each other and the word has an M & S in it.
Meetings are planned so that there is a variety of information by way of guest speakers and also social meetings, skittles, quiz or just a chat over a drink .Originally we expected to get a dozen or so people attend but most meetings average over 30 from all backgrounds and from a large area of Dorset. Most meetings are held at the Hamworthy Sports & Social Club as the location is central, easy access and a pleasant environment. Although most funding comes from the Bournemouth & District Branch the group is not run by a Committee. We like people who attend to take part in coming up with ideas for future meetings as well as help in organising them.
